Bernard Kerik to head Homeland Security
Rumors and speculation can end. Fox News is reporting that George W. Bush has indeed tapped Former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik to head the Department of Homeland Security.
UPDATE: Scott from Slant Point is disappointed that there wasn't more time for debate and discussion over who could replace Ridge - but still happy with Bush's selection.

Kerik had KJC's support on December 1st (in the Tom Ridge Stepping Down thread). Good call, KJC!

He was on the Oprah show a couple months after 911. You can read about it here:
At 1:30 a.m. on September 11, Bernard Kerik, the 40th Police Commissioner of New York City, finished a book about his hidden past and the odds he had overcome to become New York's "top cop." He was unaware that just seven hours later, a new, horrifying final chapter would begin.
Now Commissioner Kerik had to face his biggest challenge of all...bringing order to a city under siege.

I am pleased that the President did not appoint some political hack to the job like Rudi or Joe Lieberman. Kerik is a pro in the law enforcement community, managed the 9/11 disaster with great skill, and rebuilt the Iraqi police force in Baghdad. He will do a fine job. President Bush continues to confound his critics with brilliant appointments like this and that of Condi Rice for State.
